World’s Leader in Cancer Diagnostics

Accurate diagnosis is a guarantee of the only correct therapy

In 2019 Hadassah became the third clinic in the world outside the United States and the first medical center in the Middle East and Israel that received Foundation Medicine Certificate for independent extraction of genetic material for the FoundationOne CDx (F1CDx) test. Today , F1CDx is one of the most effective genetic oncological tests, allowing doctors to choose a personal treatment for the patient. When genetic material is extracted right on the spot, it saves a lot of time, which is so important in the treatment of oncological diseases.

Besides, for the first time in the world, researchers at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to identify mutations that cause cancer. This discovery is considered a breakthrough in cancer diagnostics allowing better-customized treatment.

The most advanced radiotherapy

Ethos: artificial intelligence manages the entire treatment planning process.

At the beginning of 2021 Hadassah’s radiotherapists started to use ‘ETHOS’, the state-of-the-art radiotherapy system developed by Varian Inc. By now, there are only 17 such devices in the world, in Israel and across the Middle East this equipment is available only in the Hadassah Hospital.

Contrary to all the previous models, this system is controlled by self-learning artificial intelligence, which makes possible daily individual radiation planning. It ensures a manifold increase of the radiotherapy accuracy and makes it much faster.

Metastatic melanoma stages III-IV

Using a special method of adoptive cell therapy (ACT) and a unique vaccine, during the past 18 years the Head of the Melanoma and Cancer Immunotherapy Center Professor Michal Lotem succeeded to achieve a long-term remission for more than 200 patients with III-IV stages metastatic melanoma, which could not be helped by leading specialists in the USA and Europe.

One of the currently healthy patients of Prof. Lotem, Prof. Hana Rappaport from Ben-Gurion University (Beersheba, Israel), was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in 2002; another one, the lawyer Stuart Greenberg from the United States, was diagnosed in 2012.

Brain tumors

At Hadassah Hospital the removal of brain tumors is controlled by a cutting edge device, the main element of which is a medical microscope KINEVO 900 developed by the German company ZEISS, until now – the most powerful one in the world. The microscope ensures a better vision of blood vessels and tumors during surgery, making surgical intervention much more safe and accurate.

Prostate cancer

In 2020, clinic’s oncologists started to use SpaceOAR — the breakthrough technology that raised the standards of radiotherapy for prostate cancer to a new level and made it much more accurate, safe and fast. The main element of the new technique is a biocompatible gel that separates a prostate gland from the neighboring tissues and thereby reduces the risk of their radiation.

The second element of SpaceOAR are so-called “gold grains” or golden markers allowing more precise radiotherapy of the prostate or liver.

Hadassah’s urological surgeons have the largest positive experience in performing surgeries using the Da Vinci robotic system in Israel. They were the first in the country to use Da Vinci in 2009. Robotic surgery in order to remove the prostate cancer in the clinic is carried out by one of the best specialists of Israel in this field, the Head of the Department of Urology Prof. Ofer Gofrit, who was nicknamed by colleagues “Professor Da Vinci” for his professional skills.

Kidney cancer

At the Hadassah Hospital, patients with a kidney tumor smaller than 4 cm. fully recover after complete dissection of the neoplasm. Cryotherapy at the Hadassah Hospital completely destroys the kidney tumor in 96% of cases and does not cause any side effects. Head of the Onco Urology Department at Hadassah University Hospital, Dr. Vladimir Yutkin, is the only urological surgeon in Israel who performs partial resection of a cancerous kidney (partial nephrectomy) using the Da Vinci surgical system. This is a minimally invasive surgery with a 3D model of the organ built before it, the procedure allows to save the patient’s kidney.

Colon cancer

Specialists of Hadassah Hospital manage to completely cure 74% of patients suffering from colon cancer stage I and II and often even stage III.

In 41% of cases the surgeons of Hadassah manage to replace open surgical procedures for the removal of an intestinal tumor, offered to the patient in other medical centers, with a successful minimally invasive surgery.

Hadassah’s patients with colon cancer are provided with individually tailored courses of targeted and chemotherapy, developed on the basis of complicated molecular characteristics of a tumor.

Breast cancer

At Hadassah Hospital, 90% of women diagnosed with breast cancer at early stages are completely cured due to the usage of the latest achievements of modern medicine.

Yaakov Peer completely cures 95-98% of children with retinoblastoma, preserving eyes for 70% of patients, even those recommended for removal in the best eye institutions in the world. In 2017, prof. The stories of Hadassah’s patients healed

When 17-year-old Ismail Daoud was diagnosed with leukemia, he wanted to be treated in Israel. Physicians discovered that Ismail had acute myeloid leukemia along with additional medical complications. Ismail spent six months at Hadassah in the Pediatric Oncology Unit, where he received chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Recently, Ismail celebrated his 18th birthday at Hadassah, he feels much better.

Hadassah physicians, having saved the life of Adham Schehada, age seven, who suffers from a very rare and lethal blood disease, just extended his life span again with a bone marrow transplant. Adham had previously been hospitalized in Hadassah’s Department of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology. Adham was stabilized, but he still needed a bone marrow transplant. His relatives were not eligible donors, so Adham’s parents decided to have another child with the hope that his/her bone marrow would match. Fortunately, a new brother was born, who was free of the disease and an appropriate donor. A successful bone marrow transplantation was performed! Although the severity of the blood disease means Adham is still at risk, Hadassah’s physicians are determined to do whatever they can to help him fight for his life.

When Mayar was 9 months old she couldn’t see out of her eye because the tumor was right at its center, and it occupied about half the eye’s volume. Over a period of months, Prof. Frankel and Prof. Jacob Peer, head of Hadassah’s Oncologic Ophthalmology Department, injected chemotherapy directly into Mayar’s eye.The tumor cells had died and calcified, the scattered tumor cells had disappeared and Mayar could see with that eye.
