Multidisciplinary teams of the leading cardiac surgeons and cardiologists of the country perform exclusive surgeries in the clinic, some of which are developed by the specialists of the medical center.

One of these innovations is the “Nexus” endovascular stenting system, in the development and testing of which one of the most famous cardiologists of the clinic Dr. David Planer, took an active part. The first aortic aneurysm treatment using NEXUS ™ Stent Graft System was successfully completed in Hadassah innovative hybrid operating room in June 2018. One of the main distinguishing features of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Center is a more flexible approach than in other centers, the ability to find a non-standard solution that helps to preserve the patient’s health as much as possible. Due to this, doctors managed to replace extensive and dangerous intervention with a more sparing and simple one in many cases, which always had a positive effect on the patient’s condition.

Hadassah is for honest and open treatment

In 2009, a very important event for the clinic and for the entire Israeli medicine happened: cardiologists and cardiac surgeons of Hadassah integrated their databases into the National Database of the American Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery (STS). STS collects statistics not only in all the largest American medical centers, but also from all the largest western clinics. Hadassah is still the only Israeli clinic to take this step.

With the help of a separate server and software, a special group of employees enters into the database information regarding all surgeries carried out in the cardiac surgery center and the thoracic surgery department of the Hadassah MC. This relates to heart surgery in adults, heart surgery in children and chest surgery. The collection of data is based on the exact criteria of the American Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

The collected information is transferred for processing to the data collection center in the United States, which provides periodic reports on the full scope of activities, characteristics of patients and treatment results, provides a comparative analysis with data from similar clinics in the United States and all centers participating in the project.

Using an algorithm based on multivariate analysis of data from a huge number of surgeries stored in the US database, the expected mortality and morbidity is calculated after such common surgery types as bypass surgery and valve surgery.

What does this mean for patients?

Firstly, this means that Hadassah is ready for complete openness, as, in fact, it gave public access to all data on the results of surgeries and other procedures carried out there. The doctors of the clinic had nothing to hide: the level of effectiveness and safety of treatment in Hadassah is the same and sometimes much higher than the average American.
Statistics mean a lot in cardiology and cardiac surgery, as it often allows to choose the optimal treatment method. The larger the statistics, the more accurate and complete is the analysis. So after the integration into the STS base, Hadassah doctors opened up huge opportunities, which did not hesitate to have a positive effect on the treatment quality.

Diagnostics and treatment at the medical center are carried out in conjunction with leading cardiologists who consult patients before the surgery, participate in the selection of strategy and medicines, and after the surgery evaluate the results and monitor the patient’s condition.

The medical staff of Hadassah makes every effort to help each patient to cope with the disease in the most effective way. The main advantages of treatment at the Cardiac Surgery Center of our medical center are the following:

  • Detailed diagnostics is carried out, taking into account all the individual characteristics of the patient. Specialists will conduct all the necessary tests and diagnostic studies, and only after that they will prescribe cardiac surgery if the previously used therapeutic methods have not given results. Accurate and timely diagnostics avoids the aggravation of the situation, and often death.
  • Highly qualified specialists who are constantly improving their level, studying new achievements in the field of cardiac surgery, work at the Hadassah hospital. The center provides treatment of all heart diseases requiring surgery: it includes aortic surgery units, intensive cardiotherapy, surgical treatment of heart failure and congenital heart defects.
  • All innovations in cardiac surgery are available to our patients in Israel it is difficult to find a clinic equipped as the Hadassah hospital. Operating rooms are perfectly equipped with all the necessary and the most modern medical equipment.

Examples of successful surgeries

One of the most difficult surgery types is the transplantation of a donor heart or implantation of an artificial heart. The cardiac surgeons of the clinic perform them at the highest level. In 2019, a 58-year-old patient was successfully implanted with an artificial heart to enable him to wait for a donor organ transplant. Cicatricial changes in the left ventricular myocardium, formed as a result of previous heart attacks, led to severe disruption of the patient`s heart, who was in a very grave condition.

However, not everyone can be provided with a donor or artificial heart transplant. In 2017, such a patient was admitted to the clinic after a severe myocardial infarction. The consultation of specialists came to the conclusion that the transplant will negatively affect the patient’s life quality. Cardiologists and cardiac surgeons had to perform a unique operation to restore the left ventricle, which was reshaped and placed at a different angle, which helped to cope with the aneurysm.

A practical case – a unique heart surgery

prof. Shapira and Eyal Ammar

The story of a 47-year-old Israeli, whose life was in danger due to a whole range of severe heart pathologies, is one of the best examples of all listed above.

All Israeli specialists agreed on the need for a heart transplant. But this is a very difficult operation, besides, it would greatly affect life quality of still a relatively young man.

And in Hadassah they found a solution: at the end of 2016, Professor Shapira restored the patient’s left heart ventricle, thus preventing the need for a transplant.

When a tumor was found in Daniel's heart, all experts agreed: cancer is inoperable. However, this did not stop prof. Shapira, who, together with a specialist invited from the United States, successfully removed the neoplasm and saved the patient

Most of the sensational surgeries performed by Professor Shapira were carried out with the participation of such famous cardiologists as Professor Chaim Lotan, head of the cardiology department, Professor Chaim Danenberg and many others.
