Oncology: Hadassah saves children’s eyes from cancer
At the age of 9 months, Miyar was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, which affected more than half of the eye, including the visual center. A unique combination of intra-arterial chemotherapy and direct injection of chemotherapy into the eye helped the girl regain her vision and completely recover from cancer. Miyar was treated by the head of the Eye Oncology Center, Prof. Yaakov Peer, leading onco-ophthalmologist, Prof. Shahar Frenkel and head of the Interventional Neuroradiology Department, Prof. Jose Cohen. Onco-ophthalmologists at the Hadassah clinic were the first in Israel to use both procedures simultaneously for the treatment of retinoblastoma. These methods have saved the eyes of more than 100 patients in recent years.
