SPINE SURGERY AT THE HADASSAH CLINIC: NEW ROBOT, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

The Mazor X stealth addition robotic system of the Medtronic company, created on the basis of the Israeli specialists` developments and acquired by the Hadassah clinic in May 2021, is the only one in Israel so far. Its unique abilities allowed orthopedists of the clinic to successfully perform a complex spine surgery that saved a 70-year-old patient from paralysis.

“The main advantage of this robotic system is the ability to synchronize the surgery of two computer navigation systems, which until now have operated separately. As a result, the most complex surgeries become much simpler, more accurate and safer. For example, we have recently operated on with Mazor X stealth addition a 70-year-old woman who had been suffering from a spinal infection for a long time, which would soon damage her nerves and lead to complete paralysis. Due to the age of the patient, open surgery was not possible, and antibiotics did not help. The new robotic system allowed us to perform a minimally invasive intervention without an incision, stabilize the vertebrae with screws and clean out the accumulated infected fluid without the danger of damaging the spine and almost without bleeding,” says the head of the spinal deformities treatment department and the leading spinal surgeon at the Hadassah clinic, Dr. Josh Schroeder.

“This system is the result of two decades of work by leading Hadassah spinal surgeons and combines the latest advances in artificial intelligence, computer navigation and robotic surgery. It allows to plan the surgery to the smallest detail using simulation, minimizing the possibility of the slightest error. Already this week we will use this wonderful tool again,” says Professor Meir Liebergall, Head of the Orthopedics Department at the Hadassah Clinic.

The Orthopedics Department of the Hadassah Clinic has been leading in Israel and the world in the field of robotic surgery for more than 15 years, not only constantly introducing innovative technologies, but also contributing to their development.
