UNIQUE SURGERY AT THE HADASSAH CLINIC SAVED A PATIENT WITH A RARE COMBINATION OF HEART DISEASES

In November 2021, at the Hadassah Clinic was performed the world-first surgery, which included simultaneous treatment of arrhythmia with ablation and correction of the mitral valve. The surgery lasted less than 3 hours.

The procedure was preceded by hours of discussions involving the entire team of the Cardiology Department and hours of preparations. The doctors had many doubts. Where to begin? How to do catheterization?

“Such moments clearly demonstrate why our department is considered one of the best cardiology centers in the world. Previously, in such cases, a complex surgery was required, after which a long rehabilitation followed. Now more creative and courageous solutions are available to us. I am proud to work under the direction of prof. Ofer Amir, head of the department, for whom the patient`s health is the most important,” says the cardiologist Dr. Itzhak Biton, one of those who took part in the historic surgery.

In the photo you see the cardiologists who performed this complex procedure. In the background there are Dr. David Planer, Head of the Cardiac Catheterization Department, and leading specialists of the department, Dr. Gabi Albaz-Griner and Dr. Eldad Rahamim. Together they performed a mitral valve repair. Dr. Itzhak Beaton (in the foreground) performed the ablation.
Prof. Ronen Beeri and Dr. Nissim Shadafna managed the innovative 3D imaging technology.

Special gratitude is to the anesthesiologist Prof. Yuval Maroz and his wonderful team, as well as technicians of the catheterization department, Ahmad Hadia and Naama Luxembourg and nurses, especially Halima Rashid. Thanks to them, the surgery was successful and lasted less than 3 hours.
