DR. SCHROEDER SAVED A PATIENT FROM PARALYSIS AGAIN

Jerusalem resident Islan Shaluf (21) fell from the third floor and broke her spine during the celebrations of the end of the World Football Cup. She would have remained paralyzed for life if she had not been urgently operated on by a renowned spinal surgeon Dr. Josh Schroeder, head of the Spinal Deformities Department at the Hadassah University Hospital.

Islan went to the balcony to take photos of the dancing and singing residents in the neighborhood. She suddenly felt dizzy and fell down, breaking her spine in several places.

“We saw numerous fractures in the spine images, as a result of which the spinal cord was seriously compressed. Islan felt weakness in her legs, she lost control of her natural excrements. An immediate surgery was needed to prevent paralysis. Together with senior nurse Muhammad Kunbar and anesthesiologist Dr. Valentin Levin, we performed a minimally invasive operation, during which I reconstructed the structure of the spine by fixing the vertebrae. Fortunately, the procedure was successful. In the coming days, Islan will be discharged from the hospital and she will leave on her own,” says Dr. Schroeder.
